One of the most creative responses to A&F CEO Mike Jeffries recent remarks that Abercrombie & Fitch is a brand reserved for the “socially elite”: How do you take apart an ideology that says one group of human beings is more valuable than another? By leveling the field.

Residents along a disused Vancouver Island rail spur may have been justifiably spooked by the sudden appearance of a weapons train loaded down with U.S. ballistic missiles several days ago — although the train was nothing more than a movie prop for a big-budget reboot of Godzilla.

“Yes, those are large US Ballistic Missiles headed for CFB Nanoose,” read a March 21 email being passed around in Victoria by an aloof bystander, alongside a photo of backed-up highway traffic waiting for the train to pass.

By “CFB Nanoose,” the author is referring to Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental and Test Ranges, a military facility located at nearby Nanoose Bay used for testing unarmed torpedoes.

Nevertheless, despite the missile’s “USAF” markings and faux armed escort, the missiles were simply set pieces for the first shots of the film, which stars Aaron Johnson and is set for release in May, 2014.

Lolle, this was in Nanaimo. They were filming down the street from where I live.

The Problem with “Post-Evangelical” Theology…

I’m working on a larger article to respond to some of the rather audacious statements that have come from Rob Bell, Tony Jones and Jay Bakker recently, but I thought I’d start here, because sometimes pictures are more fun than a lot of typed words…

Whether talking about hell, atonement or sexuality, the hallmark of this self-proclaimed “post-evangelical” theology (I keep seeing that word… but it’s basically the old emergent gang) is that in its expressions God looks an awful lot like whoever is writing the article.

I’ve been reading a lot of articles from this trio lately, and my biggest takeaway is that for a group that accuses traditional theologians of creating God in their image, I expected something a little better than this (simply recreating God in their image instead).

When your God always agrees with you and is only ever offended by things that offend you, it’s probably a good time for a reality check.

I get it: modern evangelicalism has some REALLY weird/wrong/odd things going on sometimes… but there’s a better alternative than this arrogant reaction to the so-called evangelical praxis.

Exactly 61 years ago this week my 19-year-old grandfather packed up his things and headed off to Belleville, Ontario to attend the 5th-annual youth-convention… and apparently he decided to keep the snazzy swag they handed out at the door.

Solid youth-ministry stands the test of time and creates a legacy of faith. 61-years later, Richard V. Talbot’s grandson (me) just happens to be serving as a Youth Pastor in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Keep that in mind and take the “long-view”!
